Mormon Freiberg Germany temple open to the public

Following renovations the Freiberg Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will open its doors to the public. Members of the Church are also known as “Mormons.” Guests can visit the temple from Friday, August 12, until Saturday, August 27, 2016, except for the Sundays of August 14 and 21, 2016. Monday tours will go from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and tours Tuesday through Saturday will go from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Reservations are not required and all tours are free.

Temples are special, holy places for members of the Church. For them, the temple is the “House of the Lord,” a place where they can strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and ensure their families are together forever. 

“Our temples are sacred places,” said Elder Paul V. Johnson, First Counselor in the Europe Area Presidency. “We are pleased for this chance to open up the temple so people can get to know us. We want them to better understand our faith inJesus Christ and how much we care about the well-being of the family and our fellow man.”

The temple was closed on February 9, 2015 for renovations. It has been lengthened by 15 meters, has larger, more comfortable rooms, and a new basement with air conditioning. This is the second renovation of the temple; the first was in 2002. The temple serves members in Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Moldova, Romania and Hungary.

The Freiberg Germany temple was originally dedicated in June of 1985, four years before the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunited. It is the only Mormon temple to have been built in a communist country. During the 11-day open house in 1985, around 90,000 people visited the temple.

On September 4, the temple will be re-dedicated by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. After the dedication, only members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who live in accordance with Christ-like principles will be allowed to enter.
